He was born in Kırıkkale in 1971. He attended elementary and middle school in Kırıkkale. He enrolled in Maltepe Military High School in 1984 and graduated in 1988. He graduated from the GATA Military Medical Faculty in 1994. After completing his internship at the GATA Training Hospital from 1994 to 1995, he served as chief medical officer at the Siirt Military Regional Command from 1995 to 1996 and at the Batman Military Regional Command from 1996 to 1997.
He completed his residency at the Urology Clinic of GATA Haydarpaşa Training Hospital between 1997 and 2001 and became a urology specialist in December 2001. He worked as a urology specialist at the J. Anıttepe Dispensary from 2002 to 2003 and at the Beytepe Military Hospital from 2003 to 2006. In December 2006, he began working as an assistant professor in the Department of Urology at GATA and was promoted to Associate Professor of Urology in April 2010.
From November 2010 to November 2011, he completed a clinical fellowship in Uro-Oncology at the Cancer Center of Columbia University in New York, United States, and received training in robotic urological surgery. In October 2011, he completed his training at the da Vinci Training Center at Hackensack University Medical Center in the United States and received the “Console Surgeon” certification in robotic surgery.
In 2013, he was appointed to the position of Associate Professor at the Urology Clinic of Istanbul GATA Haydarpaşa Training and Research Hospital. From September 2016 to October 2017, he continued in this role at the Urology Clinic of SBÜ Sultan Abdülhamit Han Training and Research Hospital and served as an associate professor in the Department of Urology at SBÜ. From October 2017 to December 2018, he served as the education coordinator at SBÜ Haseki Training and Research Hospital.
In July 2021, he retired from his position as an associate professor in the Department of Urology at SBÜ. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şeref Başal has trained numerous specialists and academics in the field of urology and has published many articles in national and international journals in his field. He possesses advanced surgical expertise, has performed countless surgeries in his specialty, has organized courses on the subject, and has participated as an instructor in numerous courses. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şeref Başal is fluent in English.
